Lessons from Angola, por IEEI

In this paper, it is analysed what lessons can be learned from the Angolan situation and how similar transitions can be more easily streamlined. The MPLA and UNITA were unable to overcome their disagreement without external intervention and the win-takes-all elections did not favour the creation of a solid reconciliation. The process of disarmament, demobilisation and creation of a single army was hampered by political factors and logistical difficulties. In international terms, the Angolan peace agreement was considered unsatisfactory and refers to the sideline action of the UN. The case of Mozambique is used as a comparison.
