Donors, Democracy and Sovereignty: The politicisation of Aid and its impact on African-EU Relations, por Anne Hammerstad
The inclusion of democracy and governance in development aid has increased the risk of European action being perceived as an intrusion into the internal affairs of African states and, consequently, as a violation of the principle of national sovereignty. This paper highlights the need for greater sensitivity on the part of donors and the establishment of objective criteria. For the author, this is only possible if the EU values relations with Africa and sees it as equal and attaches less importance to the role of aid as a factor of economic growth and invests primarily in other vectors of promoting development, such as trade or migration issues.
