Ao longo dos tempos, a referência a Portugal na obra de escritores estrangeiros é frequente e bem reveladora da importância que certos temas da cultura portuguesa têm na disseminação cultural e na própria promoção do país.
Considerando a pertinência do tema na atualidade, o Centro Nacional de Cultura desenvolve o Projecto Portugal visto por escritores estrangeiros contemporâneos, identificando referências, auscultando opiniões e recolhendo depoimentos de escritores do nosso tempo.
Numa primeira fase de recolha de depoimentos, foi dada prioridade a autores de língua inglesa. Foram identificados e selecionados escritores norte americanos (USA e Canadá) ligados ao projeto DISQUIET (Centro Nacional de Cultura e DZANK BOOKS).
Entre os autores selecionados incluem-se escritores, jornalistas e críticos literários, editores e professores de literatura.
